Granice pomi\u0119dzy okupantami okre\u015bla\u0142 traktat miedzy ZSRS i III Rzesz\u0105 o przyja\u017ani i granicach podpisany w ko\u0144cu wrze\u015bnia 1939 r. (zmodyfikowany wzgl\u0119dem zamiar\u00f3w z paktu Ribbentrop-Mo\u0142otow). Na ziemiach przy\u0142\u0105czonych do III Rzeszy i w Generalnym Gubernatorstwie zosta\u0142o ponad 2 mln \u017byd\u00f3w, po stronie sowieckiej ok. 1,5 mln.<br \/>Po zako\u0144czeniu walk dzia\u0142alno\u015b\u0107 rozpocz\u0119\u0142y niemieckie formacje policyjne, kt\u00f3re dopuszcza\u0142y si\u0119 masowych zbrodni na ludno\u015bci polskiej i \u017cydowskiej. Zgodnie z nazistowsk\u0105 polityk\u0105 eksterminacji \u201eni\u017cszych\u201d ras stworzono plan, kt\u00f3ry mia\u0142 u\u0142atwi\u0107 kontrol\u0119 nad spo\u0142eczno\u015bci\u0105 \u017cydowsk\u0105 w okupowanym kraju. Zak\u0142ada\u0142 on rejestracj\u0119 i koncentracj\u0119 ludno\u015bci niearyjskiej w wyznaczonych i odgrodzonych cz\u0119\u015bciach miejscowo\u015bci (gettach) oraz utworzenie w nich \u017cydowskiej administracji (Judenrat). W miastach (Warszawa, Krak\u00f3w, \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, Bia\u0142ystok) getta lokowano w odgrodzonych, zazwyczaj najbiedniejszych dzielnicach. Na pocz\u0105tku 1943 r. niemal ca\u0142a ludno\u015b\u0107 \u017cydowska zosta\u0142a w nich skoncentrowana. \u017bydzi nie mogli opuszcza\u0107 terenu zamkni\u0119tych dzielnic. Wszyscy mieli tak\u017ce obowi\u0105zek noszenia opasek z sze\u015bcioramienn\u0105 gwiazd\u0105 Dawida.<br \/>W kolejnych latach okupacji wprowadzono dalsze ograniczenia. \u017byd\u00f3w pozbawiono wszystkich praw, zabroniono korzystania z cz\u0119\u015bci ulic, kawiarni, budynk\u00f3w publicznych czy zakazano handlu ulicznego i poruszania si\u0119 \u015brodkami transportu publicznego bez zezwolenia.
